Unstaffed winter shelter with 15 beds and a dining room that seats 20 people. Fee: 7 euros per person.
In winter, the shelter serves as an emergency refuge or a stopover for ski touring, for example. Given the shelter’s orientation, Le Criou is in the shade all day long in winter for more than three months. Since we’re in an avalanche corridor, we remove the fireplace at the end of every summer, so no fires are allowed inside the shelter in winter. As a result, it gets very, very chilly in there! Please don’t light fires on the terrace either.
There are 15 beds in winter, each with 3 blankets; a dining room for 20 people, pots, cutlery, and plates (please wash the dishes afterward and carry ALL your trash back down), but you’ll need to bring your own propane canister. If you plan to come as a group, please let us know in advance.
There’s a spring at the far left end of the terrace (as long as it doesn’t freeze).
And above all, check the BERA before you leave! For weather and snow forecasts, MétéoAlpes provides accurate forecasts that are updated very regularly.
We ask for a contribution of €7 per person (for building maintenance, blankets, beds, etc.).

The glacial origin of Lac des Chambres ensures that its water is clear and crystal-clear. In the spring, depending on snow conditions, patches of ice may remain on its surface. A refreshing dip is guaranteed, but swimming is prohibited.
