Whether you’re an amateur, a cycling enthusiast or just use your bike to get around, the “accueil vélo” label guarantees that cycling in the village, on the cycle paths and on the itineraries of the Haut-Giffre valley will be a breeze. Among other things, this national label gives you access to suitable facilities (secure bike shelters, etc.) and a warm welcome in the village if you have a problem. Now all you have to do is get on your bike and set off to discover the region!

Electric mountain bike

Fancy getting up high and overlooking the Haut-Giffre valley? For Alpine trail enthusiasts and thrill-seekers, electric mountain biking is the ideal way to discover new vistas that might seem inaccessible at first glance. There are over 400km of trails and paths around Samoëns, a paradise for all mountain bikers! Electric mountain bikes are being used more and more for mountain tours, as they don’t require a great deal of training beforehand and allow you to go further than a walk. Beginners and lovers of mountain scenery can choose the “La Plaine et le village des Vallons” route, for example. This is a very easy mountain bike route, ideal for discovering the sport.

Road bikes

The Haut-Giffre mountains are the holy land of cycling, and one of the region’s must-do routes. Renowned throughout France for its prestigious stages in the Tour de France, the Alpine routes are accessible to you and allow you to discover or rediscover the less-frequented corners of the region. From Samoëns, there are numerous cycle routes through the Giffre valley that will take you to the summits. From the ascent of the Col de Joux-Plane, reputed to be difficult, with no flat spots and many times covered by the Tour de France, and its southern side from Samoëns, to the more accessible and less steep roads in the valley, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing your next outing. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a keen cyclist or a keen Alpine tourer.

Mountain Bike

After the skiing and snowboarding season, the snow-covered slopes of the Grand Massif resort give way to mountain bike trails and paths in summer. With over 400km of trails, 28 of which are Freeride and Single Track, and an iconic mountain pass, welcome to a mountain biker’s paradise. Whether you’re an enduro, DH or cross-country enthusiast, you’ll find the trail of your dreams in the heart of a unique, unspoilt environment. Explore the Sixt Fer à Cheval cirque, the slopes of Samoëns 1600 or the alpine trails of the passes overlooking the historic town centre.

Vélo Vert Festival

In the heart of the Haut-Giffre massif, mountain bike enthusiasts are looking forward to a weekend of passion, adventure and discovery. A wide range of disciplines will be represented at the show, as will a host of brands. You’ll be able to try out new products in real-life situations, and take advantage of the many competitions and rides organised throughout the weekend. During these few days, the Grand Massif ski lifts and gondolas will also be open to take you to the foot of the Alpine peaks.

What are the best-known road bike routes in the region?
The famous ascent of the Col de Joux-Plane is undoubtedly the best-known route in the region. It has been climbed many times by the Tour de France, and the south-facing slope offers no respite during the ascent! Perfect for pitting yourself against the champions. You can also take the Samoëns chapel trail and explore the region’s heritage. More accessible, it allows you to visit the Haut-Giffre valley in just a few hours.
Where are the departure points for the Grand Massif lifts?
The Grand Massif lifts remain open all summer for mountain bikers. From Samoëns, the Grand Massif Express cable car, located next to the Lacs aux Dames leisure centre, takes you directly to Samoëns 1600 and lets you enjoy the alpine trails. Then, to get to the Tête des Saix, at an altitude of 2120 m, the Chariande Express chairlift departs from Samoëns 1600, just off the gondola. For the rest of the resort, there are other chairlift links between Samoëns, Flaine, Les Carroz and Morillon.
What are the opening times and prices of the ski lifts?
The Samoëns and Grand Massif ski lifts are open from early July to late August/early September (depending on the village resorts). The Grand Massif Express opens at the beginning of June with the Vélo Vert Festival, so you can reach Samoëns 1600.

Where can you go mountain biking as a family with toddlers?
With the younger ones, you can go mountain biking on the paths along the Giffre, in the valley bottom. As a family, these trails are ideal because they are so accessible, even for the little ones. For a great day out, you can even finish off at the Espace des Lacs aux Dames leisure centre, where you can relax for a while.
Where can I hire children's bikes and equipment?
What better way to discover the Haut-Giffre valley and the village of Samoëns at your own pace than with a family outing! There are several options for taking the little ones with you. The majority of bike hire companies offer children’s bikes, and some of them also offer accessories for setting off on adventures with young children, such as trailers, baby seats, etc.
Where can I find a guide for an accompanied mountain bike outing?
Whether you’re an amateur or a complete novice, mountain biking can also be accompanied by a guide. The perfect way to discover the region and the Alpine trails in complete safety, there are a number of service providers in the town centre offering all kinds of routes to suit your level.
Is it possible to hire bicycles in Samoëns?
You can hire bicycles directly in the village of Samoëns. There are many bike hire companies offering road bikes, mountain bikes, electric bikes and children’s bikes. So it’s easy to set off for the day and enjoy a timeless moment in the heart of the Haut-Giffre.
Can I take the shuttle buses by bike?
In order to go further and discover the area on two wheels, the shuttles will be equipped with a bicycle rack that can accommodate up to 6 bicycles per journey (except for lines 3 and 5).
