THE WHITE MARGINS

In the summer of 2024, illustrator Lauriane Miara is undertaking an artist residency in southwest Greenland. Joining the crew of a scientific research sailboat, she sails along the island's west coast, navigating between floating ice and glaciers, past granite mountains and barren land.

In Greenland, perhaps more than anywhere else, climate change is at work. The ice is retreating toward the center of the island, while polar bears drift on ice floes that push them away. Now an emblem of a global phenomenon, this reshaped and coveted land serves as a laboratory. Between new opportunities and disappearance, between tradition and modernity, it is at the heart of an ongoing metamorphosis.

Conceived and partially created during her travels, Lauriane presents the exhibition Les Marges blanches, an evocation of a coastal environment where the ice is breaking up and polar life is transformed. Through this work, the ghost-like transformation of ice under the effect of climate change raises the question: what haunted spaces will these moving creatures leave to their successors?
