As is traditional in Samoëns, children celebrate August 15th by breaking tops in the Halle de la Grenette.
Flashback: the tradition of toupines
On the morning of August 15th, toupines, clay pots, are suspended from a rope stretched between two masts above the ground. Blindfolded, the players try to break these spinning tops using a long club, after being led astray by the spinning top. When a player succeeds, he or she only has one try, and wins the contents of the broken spinning top: sweets!
From the Samoëns tourist office, by bike, on foot or in a wheelchair, take Avenue Cognac Jaÿ, turn right at the end of the street, and 150m further on you'll arrive at Place du gros Tilleul.
Free parking nearby at Place des dents blanches and Place des Avoudruz. Blue spaces and PMR reserved spaces just ahead.
