13th Botanical Days - Guided Historical Tours
A promontory of 80m dominates the town center of Samoëns. Once bare rock, surmounted by a small castle, it is today "remarkable garden", a guided tour is required with heritage guides!
In 1906, the woman who was equally famous for her wide-ranging contribution to social work through her Cognacq-Jaÿ Foundation, donated her garden to the village. This was the place where, as a child, she had taken her goats to graze.
The garden now has 4,800 alpine plants from all over the world, from some 2,500 species. It is a naturally magical place with fountains, waterfalls, views filled with trees or dazzling colours, the ruins of the 12th-century La Tornalata castle and an 18th-century chapel are dotted along a bucolic path in the hills above Samoëns, covering a distance of 1 1/2 kilometres.
Since 1936, "La Jaÿsinia" has been listed as one of France's outstanding natural gardens and the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle is responsible for its scientific management.
